Edward R. Hugo Wins $55 Million Arbitration in Hawai’i
On June 4th, 2019, Plaintiff was drilling for soil samples in Wahiawa, Honolulu, Hawai’i. Contrary to his training, he raised the mast of his drilling rig into a high voltage overhead power line while not standing on the driller’s stand which resulted in him receiving a very severe electric shock causing permanent disabling injuries. Plaintiffs sought $55,229,895.10 in general and special damages. Because Plaintiff filed his lawsuit against his employer, his burden was to prove that Defendant “engaged in wanton conduct by clear and convincing evidence.” Iddings v. Mee-Lee, 82 Hawaiʻi 1, 919 P.2d 263 (Haw. 1996). The Arbitration Panel unanimously found and concluded that Plaintiff failed to meet his burden of proof regarding causation which resulted in a complete defense verdict.

Gene Hankes worked as a pipefitter and welder in refinery and powerhouse settings from the 1960s through 1995. During his work, Hankes worked with and around products that contained asbestos, including insulation. During that same period, beginning in the late 1950s, Hankes also performed maintenance on his own and family vehicles. Hankes purchased the parts for this work from a Checker Auto Store in Thornton, Coloroado.
Hugo Parker Wins Defense Verdict For Former Top Partners At Sedgwick LLP
After a bench trial in U.S. District Court, a Federal Judge in San Jose found that former top partners at Sedgwick LLP, represented by Edward R. Hugo, did not breach their fiduciary duty by accepting over $1.2 million dollars in financial returns in 2017. The Court specifically held that the financial analysis presented by the Liquidating Trustee’s expert was, “not credible and entitled to little weight.”
